Upgrading AIO Computer SSD

Upgrading my computer storage drive to make it run faster when opening programmes and less laggy in certain Adobe programmes.

Replacing JBL  Charge 3 Battery

Replacing a battery of an old JBL speaker of mine as the old battery had burnt out.

 Main Learning Objectives

Repair & Replace

Installing Battery

After following a great tutorial, I had the confidence to take my speaker apart. It required tools that came with the battery to open it up. There were a few fiddly parts but it went as expected.

Finding New Battery

From a short amount of amazon research, I found myself the most reliable and affordable battery for this job.

 My Learning Journey

Replacing JBL Charge 3 Battery

1.

Aim: Give the speaker a new lease of life with a new battery.

Learning Method: Youtube

Goal Achieved?

Yes. The aim was achieved and it helped a lot to create insights for the project.

Final Results

It became just like a brand new speaker again with great battery life. Everything worked first time and the tutorial really helped.

Key Insights/findings

  • Repairing Items was fun and created a greater sense of attachment after doing so

  • Its much better to try and repair something before buying something new

Transferring Data

Because I didn't have a NVME to type-C adapter, I had to initially put my whole operating system onto a memory stick. Once I had restarted the computer once on the memory stick, I could restart it again to change over the SSD. This was risky and slow as the memory stick was partly powering the whole computer. But I could then transfer the data again to the new NVME SSD and restart while pressing certain keys. This takes you to a basic screen where you can use which devices to use as the main OS for the computer.

Researching for the Best Choice

Finding the best replacement for the job took some time as there were so many options. However, this research process helped me understand storage and other systems on computers much better, and realise what was best for each use case. I chose the WD Blue 1TB NVME SSD, which had much faster write and read speeds than the one currently in my computer, as well as a larger storage capacity.

Swapping SSD

Swapping the SSD required taking apart the computer. This was made fairly simple thanks to the simple mechanisms the manufacturer Dell had used. Ideally I should wear anti static gloves and have it on a special mat when doing this, to prevent any power surges when touching it, but I managed to make it work without to save some money.

Goal Achieved?

Yes. Although it took a lot longer than expected, I managed to achieve what I set out to do.

Final Results

After the hours of trial and error when swapping out the operating systems, I finally got it working, and it was much quicker just how I had hoped.

This helped make my editing workflow much quicker which will benefit a huge amount in the long run.

Key Insights/findings

  • NVME SSD's are pretty much the fastest you can get, and the best  way to be using storage

  • Static can be a real issue when changing computer components

Trial & Error

Especially with the SSD replacement, it took a lot of trial and error as there was no specific tutorial for the situation I was in.

Youtube Tutorials

Youtube had the best range of tutorials for this.

 Learning Strategy

Goal Achieved?

Yes. This interview was very insightful, and helped me get to where my final app is now.

Expert Interview

To find out more about the repairing society, I conducted an interview with the founder of Brighton Bike Hub, Duncan Blinkhorn.

Below shows the full interview.

Key Insights/findings

  • Repairing creates a great sense of community and fulfilment

  • Mostly volunteer-led group spaces

  • Places like this need support from the local council etc

  • This is a necessary step to take for our future
